Colleges & Departments
Colleges and Academic Departments Each academic department has its own list of a number of programmatic needs that are supported by private donations. Below are just a few examples of how private support has helped Western students, faculty, and staff: Scholarships With more than two thirds of students requesting financial aid, scholarships provide important financial support and the vote of confidence that many students need to stay motivated in their studies. Professional Conferences Contributions provide funding to enable students and faculty to present their work at professional conferences and network with other professionals in their field. Christopher Wooley, a History major won the “Best Overall” award for a paper he wrote at the regional Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society Conference in Boise, Idaho. Thirteen students presented papers at the conference, which attracted more than 100 students from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Utah. New Technology Private support is used to provide new technologies to enhance classroom learning and keep our curriculum on the cutting-edge. Donations from alumni, parents and friends at Microsoft are helping update the campus with up-to-date Office software. Guest Lecturers Donations also bring speakers from throughout the world to our campus, introducing Western students and our community to new ideas and perspectives. Last year gifts to the Journalism Department helped fund the first annual Bellingham Visual Journalism Conference, which attracted 76 attendees. Presenters included Pulitzer Prize winners, National Geographic photographers, the executive editor of ESPN.com and others.
